Herb Lubalin: Art Director / Graphic Designer

Some of you may know Herb Lubalin, some of you may not. I'm positive that in the design community we all know the typeface Avant Garde. I thought it might be nice to put together a little tribute to this legendary designer and art director.

As far as I'm concerned Lubalin is one of the
greatest typographers in modern graphic design. His sensibility to space and composition among letterforms is bar none. The 1970's prominent aesthetic owes quite a bit to his formal skills.

If you haven't already, take a moment to look him up and spend some time with his solid and prolific body of work.

Armin Hofmann: Graphic Designer

Hofmann is know largely for his influence on what was to become the "swiss style". His posters are his most revered body of work.

Armin Hofmann's style is best described as economical. His streamlining of composition is arresting in it's starkness. His cleanliness of color and typography stand above most other designers of the time. His poster "Die Gute Form" is still one of my personal favorites within the realm of design.

Todd Hido: Photographer

My wife introduced me to Todd Hido a few months back. He has quickly become one of my favorite photographers currently.

The sort of calm and placid drama he establishes in his over all mood is stunning. His sense of composition and feeling for color is fantastic. I really can't say enough good things about his photography. I suggesting looking into his work and if you can find one of his monographs don't hesitate to purchase it.

Wim Crouwel: Graphic Designer

Wim Crouwel has been one of my favorite designers and typographers for some time. I first came across his work shortly after I graduated from Art Center. Needless to say I was immediately taken with it. He has remained as one of my favorite historical designers ever since.

What I think strikes most contemporary designers most about Wim Crouwel's work is his vision. For an individual designing in the 1960's his progressive

innovation, especially with typography, has become such a precursor to contemporary trends. It's not implausible to look at some of his more progressive pieces done in the sixties and feel that they were designed some time last year. His work is as fresh and solid today as it was when he designed it years ago.

Syd Mead: Illustrator

Where do you even begin with Syd Mead? The man is an incredible talent. From his work on the film Blade Runner until today he has been a titan in his industry.

Like many people, my first introduction to Syd Mead was through his concept gouache paintings for Blade Runner. Once you honed in on his style of work you began to see him everywhere. His influence still runs through the culture of my alma mater, Art Center. Every student in product design, transportation design and illustration build off of what Syd Mead laid down. He really is an amazing illustrator.

David Downton: Illustrator

I first came across David Downton about 5 years ago. I saw one of his illustrations on a postcard and instantly fell in love with his work. His sensibility for composition and his graphic styling merge to create a very elegant yet strong sort of image. I'm always impressed by his ability to produce a stark yet warm piece. His mixture of organic humanistic brush work within such strong and dominant forms is very refreshing.

IThe legendary Saul Bass. This designers work has been some of the most influential on my own. His proficiency with large corporate systems and branding issues is incredible. He has worked on and help develop some of the largest most noticeable and longest lasting brands in modern american culture.
